TOEIC Project Management Vocabulary: Deadlines and Resources

eng-test.com Editorial6 min read

Project updates ask you to track what changed, what stayed the same and what must happen first. Extend a deadline gives more time; postpone a launch moves an event later. Allocate resources assigns people, money or equipment. Our bank has 1,062 project-management-tagged questions, and extend is the keyed answer 69 times in that group.

Map a project update before choosing an answer

Separate dates, owners, resources and scope. A revised launch date does not automatically move every meeting. Additional staff may depend on approval, so a request is not the same as an allocation. Scope states what the project includes, not when it finishes.

The project-management context is 6.5% of the active bank, with 19.3% of its items labelled hard. These are overlapping context tags rather than a partition of the real TOEIC test. Use the count to select practice material, then assess your own mistakes.

18 words for deadlines, resources and progress

Numbers count exact single-word keyed answers within this tagged context, not every occurrence in passages. An em dash marks supplementary teaching vocabulary without a frequency claim. Inflected forms remain separate; collocations are teaching examples, not counted phrases.

Extend, postpone and meet a deadline

Extend changes the duration or allowed time: extend the trial or extend the deadline. Postpone moves an event later: postpone the launch. Meet a deadline means finish by the required time, not arrange a meeting. Miss a deadline means fail to finish in time.

Allocate describes assignment, not completion. “The team allocated two days to testing” does not say testing is finished. Mitigate reduces a risk or its impact; it does not promise to eliminate every problem. Overdue says a due time has passed; on track says progress still matches the plan.

Grammar can distinguish extended from extend even when the meaning is familiar. “The deadline has been extended” uses a passive participle, while “We will extend the deadline” uses a base verb after will. Review passive voice if the options differ in form.

Original practice update: a postponed pilot

Project update: The pilot launch has been postponed from 6 August to 13 August because supplier testing is incomplete. The design review will still take place on 4 August. Team leaders must submit revised staffing requests by noon on 2 August. Extra staff will be allocated only after those requests are approved. The project scope remains unchanged: the pilot covers two branches, not the whole network. Please flag any task that depends on delivery of the test equipment.

  1. What is the new pilot launch date?
  2. Has the design review also moved?
  3. When must revised staffing requests be submitted?
  4. What must happen before extra staff are allocated?
  5. Does the pilot now cover the whole network?

Answers: track changed and unchanged information

  1. 13 August. The old date, 6 August, is a distractor if the question asks for the current plan.
  2. No. It remains on 4 August.
  3. By noon on 2 August, not merely at some point that day.
  4. The requests must be approved. Submission alone is not enough.
  5. No. The scope remains two branches.

The update also asks readers to flag tasks dependent on the equipment. A dependency means one task relies on another event or input. It does not necessarily mean the dependent task has already been delayed. That inference would need more evidence.

Practise this distinction with Part 7 scanning and time prepositions.

Three project-vocabulary checks

  1. To give the team another week, the manager will ___ the deadline. (A extend / B meet / C allocate / D inspect)
  2. The coordinator will ___ two technicians to the trial. (A expire / B allocate / C refund / D publish)
  3. The report was due yesterday and is still unfinished; it is ___. (A overdue / B optional / C compatible / D confidential)

Answers: 1 A, extend gives more time. 2 B, allocate assigns resources. 3 A, overdue means past the due time. For a review drill, write a three-line update with one changed date, one unchanged meeting and one approval condition. Ask yourself one question about each.

For changes to contractual terms, continue with legal and contract vocabulary. Dictionary reference: Cambridge Dictionary, allocate.

Sources and counting method

The figures come from all 16,214 active, original eng-test.com questions fetched on 27 September 2026. Topic counts use skill labels or exact context tags; groups can overlap. Difficulty means an editorial label, not a measured learner error rate or the difficulty of an official TOEIC paper. Exact project-management tag. The count of extend is its exact keyed-answer form, separate from extended or extending.

Frequently asked questions

Is extend a deadline the same as postpone a launch?

Both can concern more time, but extend changes the allowed time while postpone moves an event later. Choose the verb that fits its object.

Does allocate staff mean the project is complete?

No. It means assign people to the work. Completion requires a separate statement.

What does project scope mean in a TOEIC-style memo?

Scope is the extent of work included, such as two pilot branches rather than the entire network. It is different from the schedule.

How do I read a project dependency without over-inferring?

Identify what a task relies on. Do not assume the task has been delayed or cancelled unless the text states or supports that consequence.
