TOEIC Marketing Vocabulary: Campaigns, Launches and Offers

eng-test.com Editorial6 min read

TOEIC-style marketing texts connect a goal, an audience, an action and a response. Learn launch a campaign, devise a strategy and expand a customer base as phrases. In our 1,225 marketing-tagged questions, increase, boost and enhance are keyed answers 40, 39 and 38 times; their frequency is a study aid, not an official exam forecast.

Follow the campaign from planning to response

A briefing may move from research to a target audience, a proposed message, production and launch. A question about the purpose of the message is different from a question about who receives it. Label those fields before trying to memorise every marketing noun.

The marketing tag appears on 7.6% of the active bank, and 17.4% of that tagged group is labelled hard. Some questions test the form of a verb such as developing rather than the meaning of a specialised term. Use word-form patterns when the options share a root.

18 marketing terms with contextual examples

Numbers count exact single-word keyed answers within this tagged context, not every occurrence in passages. An em dash marks supplementary teaching vocabulary without a frequency claim. Inflected forms remain separate; collocations are teaching examples, not counted phrases.

Launch, devise and promote: choose the action stage

Devise concerns creating an idea or plan; launch concerns starting or introducing it. Promote concerns encouraging interest, supporting something, or moving a person to a higher position, depending on the object. A sentence about a promotion can therefore refer to a sales offer or a staff change.

Effective means achieving the intended result, while efficient concerns the use of resources. A campaign can attract customers yet use too much time or money. In a sentence about “an ___ campaign,” both adjectives might be possible until the context tells you which distinction matters.

Boost sales, increase sales and enhance sales performance can all be natural. Do not treat every collocation as exclusive. The purpose of our collocation guide is to teach common combinations while keeping sentence meaning in view. For staff promotion, compare HR vocabulary.

Original practice briefing: read the dates and the offer

Campaign briefing: The new brochure is aimed at small business owners. The design team must submit the final layout by 12 June, and printing will begin on 15 June. The campaign launches on 20 June. Customers who request a demonstration by 30 June will receive a free setup session; the offer does not include a discount on equipment. Please collect feedback from demonstration attendees so that we can adapt the next campaign.

  1. Who is the brochure intended for?
  2. What is due on 12 June?
  3. When does the campaign launch?
  4. What must customers do by 30 June to qualify?
  5. Does the offer reduce the price of equipment?

Briefing answers and the traps

  1. Small business owners, not all demonstration attendees. The first sentence identifies the target audience.
  2. The final layout, not the printed brochures. Printing starts later.
  3. 20 June. Do not confuse the design deadline, printing date and launch date.
  4. Request a demonstration. The deadline applies to the request, not necessarily to completing the demonstration.
  5. No. The benefit is a free setup session, and equipment discounts are explicitly excluded.

The last distinction is a reading task, not a vocabulary task: qualification, benefit and exclusion must stay separate. Use Part 7 scanning to map each question to the sentence that answers it.

Three marketing vocabulary checks

  1. Before production starts, the team will ___ a new strategy. (A devise / B refund / C resign / D expire)
  2. The survey is intended to identify the target ___. (A audience / B invoice / C outage / D warranty)
  3. The message achieved its intended result, so it was ___. (A effective / B overdue / C unavailable / D optional)

Answers: 1 A, devise is to create a plan. 2 A, audience is the group the message should reach. 3 A, effective describes the intended result. Rewrite the briefing with a different audience and launch date; then write a question whose answer is the offer condition rather than the date.

Continue with project-management vocabulary for deadlines and resources, or customer-service vocabulary for replies after a campaign. Dictionary reference: Cambridge Dictionary, campaign.

Sources and counting method

The figures come from all 16,214 active, original eng-test.com questions fetched on 27 September 2026. Topic counts use skill labels or exact context tags; groups can overlap. Difficulty means an editorial label, not a measured learner error rate or the difficulty of an official TOEIC paper. The exact marketing tag defines the group. All table examples are original teaching combinations.

Frequently asked questions

What does launch a campaign mean in business English?

It means start or introduce the organised campaign. It is different from devising its strategy before launch.

Can promotion mean something other than a sales offer?

Yes. Promotion can refer to encouraging interest or to moving an employee to a higher position. The surrounding nouns identify the meaning.

How do I distinguish effective from efficient in a campaign?

Effective concerns achieving the intended result. Efficient concerns doing something with a good use of resources. The sentence must supply enough context to choose.

Does a campaign deadline always mean the launch date?

No. A briefing can contain separate deadlines for artwork, printing, launch and customer eligibility. Match the date to the action in the question.
